The story behind the rc-competitions portal.
Allow me to introduce the background of how the rc-competitions portal came to be.
My name is Henrich Brunner, and I started aeromodelling around 2007–2008 (at first with ready-to-fly RC helicopters bought from China).
In 2011 the Bardejov Model Club was founded, and I have been its vice-chairman from the beginning.
Together with the club’s activities we also founded a modelling workshop, where children began flying chuck gliders and free-flight models.
Most club members flew vintage aircraft models, and I too started building in the classic way from historical plans. With the first models, the competition chapter began as well.
Since the first contest, Šarišské krídlo 2010, organised by our club, I have regularly taken part in vintage-model competitions. For those who come to contests in Bardejov, I am the one with the wolfdog — a Czechoslovakian Wolfdog.
Together with our members I took part in various events related to vintage models. Together with our modelling workshop and the children who attended it, we also entered free-flight contests.
Later, as I became more involved in organising our club contests, I began to think about how to simplify — and above all how to make clearer and digital — the entering, scoring and publishing of contest results.
Anyone who has been to at least one contest knows the picture.
Paper registrations, slips of paper and stopwatches for timekeepers. At registration, competitors’ and models’ names are written down as “write what you hear”, and every results sheet ends up with its own unique spelling.
Some timekeepers record minutes and seconds, another writes seconds only. Some write like a doctor, others like a cat.
Preparing the contest itself, and later the scoring and the prize-giving, is already time-consuming. Then, in the better case, a few days later — sometimes weeks later — came the retyping into Excel and publication.
Later, various Excel sheets or even PC programs appeared and made things more comfortable, but it was still always a local (read: offline) affair.
That is why, a few years ago, I started considering a portal that would serve all contest organisers, timekeepers and competitors.
